May is here, marking the start of our fifth annual celebration of all things fantastic! Wyrd and Wonder means raving about our favourite fantasy books, yelling about movies and tv shows, sharing the games that light our fires, seeking out new authors and making new friends. Sure, we read fantasy all year round – but in May we do it together.

A year after saving the wakewyrm, the resistance port of Safeharbour is raided by the Bern; more arakeesians are sighted, putting the Hundred Isles back on a war footing; and the toxic cargo of a merchant ship suggests the Thirteenbern has even darker plots afoot. The battle for peace teeters on a knife-edge – and there’s a mutiny brewing aboard the Tide Child...
Later than advertised (sorry folks, last weekend got away from me), it’s time for one last affectionate look back at our amazing month of Wyrd and Wonder. A huge hearty THANK YOU to everyone who took part – you make Wyrd and Wonder what it is and we love you for it.
It’s the big finale: look around at the faces around you, the light of new worlds shining in their eyes, their hearts full with new characters, their shelves creaking in anticipation of the grand emptying of the book bags at month’s end. Raise a glass to your fellow adventurers and settle in for the tale of the party’s Wyrd and Wonderful adventures over this past week…
It’s the final week of the Wyrd and Wonder read-along, where we’re discussing The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart. There’s absolutely no avoiding spoilers now, so proceed at your own risk! Mayri the BookForager is our host for this final week.
The First Man still walks the Earth, but time has taken its toll. Adam finds it hard to relate to his mortal children, hard to engage with the world. When he finds a fragment of Eden, it gives him new purpose. Can Paradise be rebuilt? Who should inherit it?

Juliet McKenna is an author I’d been meaning to read forever. When good bookfriends expressed quiet but fervent enthusiasm for The Green Man’s Heir, I decided it was time to take the plunge. Today I’m here to be your good bookfriend and express my own quiet but fervent enthusiasm for this contemporary folkloric fantasy series. You should take the plunge, the water is fine if full of terrifying naiads and nixes.
You may know the saying: no two people in the contacted world are more than six social connections apart. Inspired by Kate at Books Are My Favourite And Best, I apply this notion to books, seeking interesting ways to hop from one book to the next based on a shared author, theme, award win and so on. For Wyrd and Wonder, I’m delighted to welcome Christopher Buehlman to take the Six Degrees challenge as part of The Blacktongue Thief’s book birthday celebrations.
After each adventure, it’s recommended you take a brief pause to catch your breath before heading back out into the worlds of fancy. Join me by the fire to hear what your fellow adventurers have been up to in the third week of Wyrd and Wonder…
Although Lin continues to impress her father with her simulated memories, her tentative friendship with Bayan is reset after her foster brother falls ill. Meanwhile Jovis finds himself thrust into the heart of the Shardless Few’s plans, but the more he sees of Gio, the more uneasy he grows…
Joan and Victor were two souls united against the world until the night Victor stormed out after a fight and never came home. When Joan finds him leading a prayer meeting a year later, he’s a stranger with her husband’s face, who claims not to remember her. What happened to Victor out in the dark?
I’m cheerleading for debut authors again today, because the past year has been an awfully hard time to hit the shelves for the first time. Last week, I focused on adult fantasy debuts – today I’m taking a look at YA and cross-over fantasy debuts since last year’s Wyrd And Wonder.
We’re in the heart of our adventures now, exploring new worlds, making new friends, finding new authors, characters and stories to get excited about. Worried you may have missed out? Grab a seat, friend. Your Wyrd and Wonder bards are here to sing you the tales of the past week…
This week, events keep conspiring to turn Jovis aside from his pursuit of the mysterious boat with blue sails thanks to his growing reputation as a smuggler …and as a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, Lin progresses in learning bone shard magic – and in recovering fragments of her memories. But will Ranami ever persuade Phalue to challenge the status quo?
I enjoy a fun book tag, and when I saw Tanja’s Bookish Memory Check over at Where Stories Lie, I knew I wanted to have a go. I like to think my TBR and my shelves are fairly curated, so I should know what all these books are about, right? Yes, well, let’s find out!
