The Dark is Rising #ReadTDiR

The Dark is Rising SequenceIt’s the most magical time of the year: time for the annual The Dark is Rising readathon. If you’ve never encountered Susan Cooper’s classic, it’s not too late – join us from December 20th for a whirlwind of myth and magic told in lyrical prose that will leave you with goosebumps.

When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back;
Three from the circle, three from the track;
Wood, bronze, iron; Water, fire, stone;
Five will return and one go alone.

Iron for the birthday; bronze carried long;
Wood from the burning; stone out of song;
Fire in the candle ring; water from the thaw;
Six signs the circle and the grail gone before.

Fire on the mountain shall find the harp of gold
Played to wake the sleepers, oldest of old.
Power from the Green Witch, lost beneath the sea.
All shall find the Light at last, silver on the tree.

As the Stanton household prepare for Christmas, Will – the seventh son of a seventh son – turns eleven and discovers his birthright. This midwinter, the Dark is rising and only Will, last of the Old Ones, can stop them. Read with us as we join Will on his journey through time to vanquish the Rider and gather the ancient Signs of Light in preparation for the final battle…

We start on December 20th, the eve of Will’s birthday, and read through until Twelfth Night. Check out the official schedule for reading The Dark is Rising (…don’t worry, you can read Over Sea, Under Stone later if you decide you want to explore the rest of the sequence).

Spoilery reflections from my last TDiR Readathon.
